Michiel van Erp is a renowned director of various forms of media, including movies, television series, documentaries, and plays. His productions have garnered recognition from prestigious award-giving bodies such as the International Emmy Awards and the Dutch Golden Calf competition, with his leading actors also receiving accolades for their work.
Born in 1963 in Eindhoven, Michiel van Erp graduated from the Technical University in Delft in 1988 with a degree in Industrial Design. He began his career as an actor from 1988 to 1992 before transitioning to directing in 1993. His documentary series "Long Live...", which explored the hopes and desires of Dutch people, aired for seven years on Dutch television and won numerous national and international awards.
Van Erp's feature documentary debut, "A Funfair behind the Dikes" (2007),was a massive success in Dutch cinemas, and many documentaries followed. His international feature documentary "I am a Woman Now" (2011) chronicled the experiences of the first generation of transsexuals, while "MH17: A Nation's Grief" (2015) provided an intimate look at the impact of the MH17 plane crash on Dutch people.
Van Erp's drama debut, "Ramses" (2014),was a huge success and won several awards, including the Nipkowschijf (Best TV-program of the year),Prix Europa (Best European Dramaseries),and a nomination for a BAFTA. His subsequent drama series, "I.M.", was broadcast in 2020 and earned a nomination for a Prix Europa. Leading actor Ramsey Nasr received a Dutch Golden Calf for Best Actor for his role.
In addition to his work in television, Van Erp has also directed feature films, including "Open Seas" (2018),which was nominated for nine Golden Calf awards, and "Stromboli" (2022),which was released on Netflix. He is also the co-owner of production company De Familie Film & TV, which he founded with producer Monique Busman in 2004.
