Mildred Augustine Wirt Benson, a renowned figure in the world of series books and children's literature, was a multifaceted individual who left an indelible mark on the literary world. Known by various pseudonyms such as Carolyn Keene, Frances Judd, Dorothy West, and Helen Louise Thorndyke, among others, she was a prolific writer who penned over 130 books for children, numerous short stories, and thousands of newspaper stories and columns.
Her most notable achievement was being the original Carolyn Keene, author of 23 of the first 30 Nancy Drew mystery stories. However, her legacy extends far beyond Nancy Drew, revealing a fascinating woman, life, and career. From a young age, Benson had always dreamed of becoming a writer, and her first published work, The Courtesy, was featured in the children's magazine St. Nicholas, earning her a silver badge.
Benson was a trailblazer in many ways, being the first woman and student to graduate with a master's degree in journalism from the University of Iowa in 1927. She wrote her first Nancy Drew book, The Secret of the Old Clock, at the age of 24, and went on to write many more books under various pen names.
