Mithun Chakraborty, born Gouranga Chakraborty, is a multifaceted individual, exceling as an actor, producer, and politician. He is a former Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha and has made significant contributions to the Hindi and Bengali film industries.
Chakraborty pursued his education at Oriental Seminary and later earned a B.Sc. degree in Chemistry from Scottish Church College in Kolkata. He further graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.
Throughout his illustrious career, Chakraborty has appeared in over 350 films across various languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Odia, Kannada, Telugu, and Punjabi. His acting debut in Mrigayaa (1977) earned him his first National Film Award for Best Actor.
Chakraborty's early career was marked by minor roles in films like Do Anjaane (1976) and Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan (1978). However, his breakthrough role came with the low-budget espionage film Surakksha (1979). He also gained recognition for his performance in Basu Chatterjee's film Prem Vivah (1979).
Chakraborty's collaboration with Deepak Bahry in 1979 led to many hit films in the 1980s, including Humse Badhkar Kaun: The Entertainer (1998),Hum Se Hai Zamana (1983),and Woh Jo Hasina (1983).
In Bengali cinema, Chakraborty made his debut with Nadi Theke Sagare (1978) and later impacted Hindi cinema in the 1980s with over 110 releases. He played iconic roles in films like Disco Dancer (1982) and Taxi Chor (1980).
Between 1990 and 1999, Chakraborty appeared in over 100 movies, delivering several outstanding performances. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Agneepath (1990) and received two National Film Awards for his performances in Tahader Katha (1992) and Vivekananda (1998).
Chakraborty continued to make a mark in the film industry, appearing in several blockbusters from 2000 to 2019. His film Elaan (2005) received widespread acclaim, and his movie Zor Lagaa Ke... Haiya! (2009) won multiple International awards.
