Mithun Chakraborty, born Gouranga Chakraborty, is a renowned Indian actor, producer, and politician. He has had a prolific career spanning over four decades, with appearances in more than 350 films across various languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Odia, Kannada, Telugu, and Punjabi.
Mithun began his education at Oriental Seminary and later pursued his B.Sc. degree in Chemistry from Scottish Church College in Kolkata. He then graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.
Chakraborty made his acting debut with the 1977 film Mrigayaa, which earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor. Throughout his early career, he appeared in minor roles in films like Do Anjaane (1976) and Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan (1978).
However, it was his role in Surakksha (1979) that catapulted him to fame. He then collaborated with Deepak Bahry, resulting in a string of successful films in the 1980s, including Humse Badhkar Kaun: The Entertainer (1998),Hum Se Hai Zamana (1983),and Woh Jo Hasina (1983).
Mithun debuted in Bengali cinema with Nadi Theke Sagare (1978) and made a significant impact on Hindi cinema in the 1980s with over 110 releases. He played Jimmy in the iconic 1982 film Disco Dancer (1982),which was the first film in India to gross Rs. 100 crores.
Between 1990 and 1999, Mithun appeared in over 100 movies and delivered several outstanding performances. He won two National Film Awards for his roles in Tahader Katha (1992) and Vivekananda (1998).
Mithun has continued to appear in numerous films throughout his career, including blockbusters like Elaan (2004),Zor Lagaa Ke... Haiya! (2009),and Phir Kabhi (2008). He has also ventured into the Bhojpuri film industry, starring in the biggest Bhojpuri film, Bhole Shankar (2008).
In addition to his film career, Mithun has also made a mark in politics, serving as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. He has received numerous awards and accolades for his performances, including three National Film Awards, two Filmfare Awards, one Screen Award, and several other prestigious awards.
Mithun has been married twice, first to actress Helena Luke, and then to Yogeeta Bali, with whom he has four children, including actor Mimoh Chakraborty.
