Nan Munro was born Anne Mackay Munro on June 24, 1905, in Piet Potgietersrust, South Africa. She was a multifaceted individual, exceling as an actress, producer, and professional director.
She had a family life, marrying William Gau and having three children, Donald, John, and Angela, with him.
In the realm of theatre, Munro produced "French Without Tears" in 1942. Additionally, she co-founded the Munro-Inglis Company in 1944 with Margaret Inglis. The company saw the production of numerous plays, including "Full House" (1943 and 1945),"French Leave" (1943),"My Sister Eileen" (1944),and "Ladies in Retirement" (1946). Munro starred in several of these productions.
Tragedy struck when her husband, Gau, passed away in 1945. However, Munro continued her career, starring as Eliza in the 1946 production of "Pygmalion". This marked the beginning of a romantic relationship with writer Rayne Kruger. The couple, along with Munro's three children, sailed for England, where they were married the following year in London. Munro resumed her West End career.
Apart from stage productions, Munro worked extensively in British television. In 1965, she appeared in the BBC's filmed version of the play "Try for White".
Munro continued to work in theatre, starring in Margaret Inglis's production of "The Importance of Being Earnest" for NAPAC in Durban after 1962 and "The Lady's not for Burning" (NAPAC, 1970s).
However, her personal life took a tumultuous turn when Rayne left her in 1973, revealing a 13-year secret affair with Prue Leith, the daughter of her long-time collaborator, Margaret Inglis.
