Nargis, born Fatima Rashid on June 1, 1929, in Rawalpindi, British India, was the daughter of Jaddanbai, a renowned dancer, singer, actor, composer, and director, and Uttamchand Mohanchand, a former Hindu Mohyal Brahmin who converted to Islam as Abdul Rashid.
Growing up in a family with a strong background in the performing arts, Nargis began her career as a child artiste, known as Baby Nargis, at a tender age of six in 1935. She was the half-sister of Bollywood actors Anwar Hussain and Akhtar Hussain.
Nargis's on-screen romance with actor Raj Kapoor was well-documented, and it is widely known that they had an off-screen romance as well. Raj, who was already married, refused to divorce his wife and marry Nargis.
In 1958, Nargis married Sunil Dutt, with whom she had three children, including Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, and two daughters, Priya and Anju. Sanjay went on to marry actress Richa Sharma, who sadly passed away due to cancer, and had a daughter named Trishala. He later married Rhea Pillai, whom he divorced, and is now married to Manyata Dutt, formerly known as Dilnawaz Shaikh, with whom he has twins, Iqra and Shahraan.
Nargis's daughter, Anju, is married to Bollywood actor Kumar Gaurav, the son of actor Rajendra Kumar. Sunil Dutt went on to win a seat in the Indian Parliament, and after his passing, their daughter, Priya, won his vacant seat.
Nargis passed away on May 3, 1981, due to pancreatic cancer, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most iconic actresses in Indian cinema.
