Laura Campbell, affectionately known as Little Nell, was born on May 24th, 1953, in Sydney, Australia. Her father, Ross Campbell, a renowned journalist and humorist, coined her the nickname Little Nell in his weekly newspaper column, which chronicled their family life.
As a child, Nell began her training in various forms of dance and singing at the tender age of ten. She studied ballet, modern dance, tap, and singing, laying the foundation for her future career.
Upon completing high school, Nell attended a one-year course at Drama School, where she honed her craft and prepared herself for the challenges of the entertainment industry.
At the age of 18, Nell made the bold decision to leave her native Australia and move to London, where she took on various jobs to make ends meet. Among her many endeavors, she busked on the streets, singing and tap dancing to 1930s tunes. It was during this time that director Jim Sharman spotted her and approached her about starring in his upcoming stage production, The Rocky Horror Show.
The show, which premiered at the tiny Theatre Upstairs of The Royal Court Theatre, was an overnight sensation. The three-week rehearsal period was marked by the writing of new songs, and the show's success was immediate. The following year, the film adaptation, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, was released, although it initially failed to gain traction. It wasn't until midnight screenings with audience participation began that the film's popularity soared, making it the longest-running film of all time.
Throughout her illustrious career, Nell has released a string of singles for A&M Records, opened her legendary nightclub, Nell's, in NYC, and worked as a journalist, all while continuing to appear in theatre, television, and film. Her daughter, Tilly, was born in 1998, and Nell has balanced her career with her role as a devoted mother.
