Osamu Goto, a renowned mechanical engineer, was born on November 27, 1948, in Tokyo, Japan. He graduated from Tokyo's Metropolitan College of Aeronautical Engineering in 1970, and shortly after, he joined Honda's research department, where he focused on exhaust emissions.
As Honda increased its involvement in Formula 1 racing in the mid-1980s, Goto transitioned to the racing division. He played a pivotal role in developing Honda's turbocharged engines, which powered teams like Williams and McLaren to multiple Constructors' and Drivers' Championships.
Under his leadership, Honda achieved remarkable success with the McLaren-Honda partnership, securing four consecutive Constructors' titles from 1988 to 1991. After Honda's withdrawal from Formula 1, Goto joined Ferrari in 1993 as head of engine research and development, contributing to the team's engine advancements.
In 1997, he became head of the engine department at Sauber Petronas Engineering AG. Following his tenure in Formula 1, Goto founded Geo Technology in 2006, an engineering consultancy specializing in high-performance powertrains for the automotive and motorcycle industries.
