Pablo Stoll, a talented Uruguayan film director and screenwriter, entered the world of cinema in the mid-1970s. His academic pursuits took him to the Catholic University of Uruguay, where he majestically studied Social communication. It was during this time that he had the privilege of meeting two like-minded individuals, Juan Pablo Rebella and producer Fernando Epstein. Together, they founded the innovative production company Ctrl Z, a venture that would serve as a catalyst for their future creative endeavors.
Upon graduating in 1999, Stoll and Rebella embarked on a remarkable journey, directing their debut feature film, 25 Watts, in 2001. This groundbreaking work went on to garner widespread recognition, earning numerous international accolades. The duo's subsequent feature film, Whisky, released in 2004, premiered at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, receiving the esteemed Un Certain Regard award. This cinematic masterpiece opened the doors to a world of possibilities, solidifying Stoll's reputation as a visionary filmmaker.
Tragedy struck when Rebella took his own life, leaving Stoll to navigate the challenges of creating without his creative partner. In response, Stoll crafted Hiroshima, a poignant "silent musical" that reduced verbal communication to brief intertitles. This emotional and thought-provoking film served as a testament to Stoll's resilience and artistic depth.
The world was once again treated to Stoll's masterful storytelling when his film 3 was selected for screening in the Directors' Fortnight section at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. Throughout his illustrious career, Pablo Stoll has consistently pushed the boundaries of cinematic storytelling, leaving an indelible mark on the world of film.
