Biography

Henriette Ragon, who would later become famously known by her stage name Patachou, was a celebrated French vocalist and thespian, whose life began on June 10, 1918, marking the start of a remarkable journey that would ultimately earn her a place among the most revered and accomplished performers of her time.

The life of Patachou was a tapestry woven from the threads of diverse vocations, as she navigated a series of occupations that shaped her formative years. Prior to embarking on her illustrious career, Patachou's daily life was a testament to her adaptability and resilience, as she worked as a typist, a factory worker, a shoeseller, and even an antique dealer.

Fast forward to 1948, a pivotal year that marked a significant turning point in Patachou's professional journey. Alongside her husband, Jean Billon, she took the bold step of acquiring a cabaret-restaurant in the iconic Montmartre district, which they would lovingly name Patachou.

Patachou, the illustrious proprietor of the esteemed cabaret, embarked on a journey to serenade patrons within the cozy confines of the bistro, mesmerizing crowds with her enchanting vocalizations. The press began to dub her Patachou, an appellation born from the name of her cabaret, which, when translated from French, conveys the notion of cream puff dough. As her talent and captivating stage presence continued to flourish, Patachou attracted the attention of renowned artists, including the incomparable Georges Brassens, who took the stage alongside her and even penned original compositions exclusively for her remarkable vocal talents.

Patachou's ascent to renowned status was characterized by her exceptional skill in rendering Georges Brassens' songs into captivating performances, with notable standouts being her emotive interpretations of "Maman, papa", "Le bricoleur", and "La chasse aux papillons". This remarkable talent did not go unnoticed, as it was her electrifying stage presence that prompted audience members to surrender their half-ties, which she then ingeniously stapled to the ceiling, thereby creating a one-of-a-kind aesthetic that became an integral part of her performances.

Patachou embarked on a remarkable musical journey in 1952, commencing with the release of her inaugural records, which subsequently paved the way for her performances at the prestigious Bobino music-hall, a renowned venue in France. Her subsequent tours across the French countryside further solidified her reputation as a talented singer, ultimately culminating in appearances at iconic American establishments such as the Palladium, Waldorf Astoria, and Carnegie Hall. Undeterred by geographical boundaries, Patachou continued to tour extensively, venturing to distant lands like Japan and Sweden, where her charming, cheeky Parisian register endeared her to fans and earned her a special place in their hearts.

Noted French singer and actress Patachou's remarkable life was marked by a plethora of prestigious recognitions, with a particularly notable distinction being her appointment as an Officier of the Légion d'honneur on January 1, 2009.

As her remarkable career drew to a close, Patachou's remarkable life came to a poignant end on April 30, 2015, at the remarkable age of 96, leaving behind a lasting legacy as a cherished and admired French singer and actress.
