Following her secondary education, she proceeded to further her academic pursuits by enrolling in the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa for a period of two years.
Subsequently, she transferred to the University of Nebraska, where she continued to excel academically. However, her time at the University of Nebraska was also marked by instances of racism, which she tackled head-on by actively advocating for the elimination of segregation policies.
As Mink devoted herself to her academic pursuits, her enthusiasm and dedication were unfortunately interrupted by unforeseen health issues, necessitating her return to her native Hawaii to complete her studies.
Despite this setback, Mink's determination to succeed was unbroken, as she faced an unexpected rebuff when all twelve medical schools to which she had applied rejected her applications.
Undaunted by this series of unfortunate events, Mink received valuable guidance from her employer, who recognized her exceptional abilities and encouraged her to explore a career in law.
Taking this sage advice to heart, Mink successfully secured a place at the prestigious University of Chicago Law School in the year 1948, marking a pivotal turning point in her life and career.

As their academic journey progressed, the couple's personal lives intertwined, culminating in their marriage.
Following Mink's graduation in 1951, she and her husband, John, encountered difficulties in securing employment opportunities. In an effort to build a more stable future, they made the bold decision to relocate to the tropical paradise of Hawaii. The move proved to be a wise decision, as it ultimately led to the arrival of their daughter in 1952, marking a significant milestone in their lives.
