Biography

Mousie Garner, affectionately known as "The Grand Old Man Of Vaudeville", was a renowned comedian-musician and a treasured national icon. This legendary entertainer was the last surviving member of comedian Ted Healy's Stooges and the final performing headliner from the golden era of vaudeville. Despite his remarkable career spanning over eight decades, Mousie continued to work tirelessly until his death, albeit at a slower pace, having given up his daily dose of slapstick comedy at the age of 65.

Mousie's stage debut took place as a child in 1913, where he showcased his talents by singing, dancing, and imitating Al Jolson in a family musical-comedy act developed by his father. Even as a young boy, Mousie entertained soldiers during World War I, and by the 1920s, he had already decided to pursue a career on the vaudeville stage.

Throughout his illustrious career, Garner was part of Ted Healy's new stooges, joining Joe DeRita and Frank Mitchell in a short-lived act known as "The New Three Stooges" in the 1970s. Mousie also appeared on Broadway, in major national touring companies, and in various film, television, and radio productions. He worked in nightclubs, auditoriums, and concert halls, solidifying his reputation as a versatile and accomplished entertainer.

Mousie's military service during World War II saw him serving in the U.S. Army, where he achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant before completing his tour of duty. He participated in the Allied forces' North African campaign and was injured twice on duty, earning several commendations, including the Purple Heart. After recovering from his wartime injuries, Mousie joined the U.S.O. to star in their touring company of "Hellzapoppin'", a show staged for servicemen throughout Europe during the post-war occupation.

Mousie is represented twice on the Hollywood "Walk of Fame" via his association with "The Three Stooges" and musical parodists Spike Jones and His City Slickers. He enjoyed stints as lead performer in both of these unforgettable comedy ensembles and appeared as a "guest of honor" at the star-unveiling ceremony for "The Three Stooges" in 1983.

In addition to his work with the Stooges, Mousie also performed in popular television series such as "Surfside 6" (1960). He remained an active figure in the entertainment industry until his passing in 2004 at the age of 95, leaving behind a legacy that continues to delight audiences to this day.
