Peter Nicks is a renowned documentary filmmaker, celebrated for his exceptional camera work and observational style. His feature film, The Waiting Room, garnered widespread critical acclaim, earning an Independent Spirit Award and securing a spot on the Academy Award shortlist in 2012. The Force, the second installment in his trilogy, won the prestigious Sundance Directing Prize in 2017. Homeroom, the final chapter in the trilogy, took home the inaugural Jonathan Oppenheim Editing Award at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.
In addition to his filmmaking accomplishments, Nicks is a dedicated member of the board of trustees for the Sundance Institute.
Nicks co-founded Proximity Media alongside fellow Oakland-based filmmaker Ryan Coogler in 2021. He directed the company's inaugural films, Anthem and Stephen Curry: Underrated. Throughout his career, Nicks has received numerous accolades, including the San Francisco Film Society screenwriting grant and a United States Artists Fellowship.
Nicks holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Howard University and a Master's degree in journalism from the University of California at Berkeley. He resides with his family in the San Francisco Bay Area.
