As a renowned British journalist, reporter, and newsreader, he was one of the BBC's most recognized and respected broadcasters of his time. His remarkable career was marked by numerous notable achievements, including being the biological father of BBC broadcaster Justin Webb.

Woods' iconic status as a British newsreader made him a staple of comedy sketches and films throughout the 1970s and 1980s. His appearances in various productions, such as Monty Python, There's a Lot of It About, The New Statesman, and Jonnie Turpie's 1987 film Out of Order, cemented his place as a beloved and recognizable figure in British entertainment.

In addition to his work in television, Woods also lent his voice to various advertising campaigns, including a memorable 1980s advertisement for KP Cheese Dips. Furthermore, he participated in the 1977 Christmas edition of the Morecambe and Wise Show, delivering a hilarious rendition of the song "There Is Nothing Like a Dame" from the musical South Pacific.
