Rachel Luttrell is a multifaceted individual, born in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to a powerful medicine man's daughter and a respected professor of economics.
As a child, she studied piano at the Royal Conservatory and ballet at the Russian Academy of Classical Ballet, with her father, a former member of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and the Canadian Opera Company, training her soprano voice.
Rachel's family immigrated to Canada when she was five, settling in Toronto, where she developed a passion for the arts. She played the alto saxophone in high school, studied English horseback riding, and was known for staging self-produced shows with her three sisters.
Luttrell's first film role was in the made-for-television movie Courage (1986),starring alongside Sophia Loren. She later appeared in commercials and TV programs, including the long-running drama Street Legal (1987).
After high school, she enrolled in the musical theater program at Sheridan College, but left after a year to pursue a bachelor's degree in English literature at the University of Toronto.
Rachel made her musical theater debut in the Canadian premiere production of "Miss Saigon" and later starred in "Beauty and the Beast" alongside her sister Gillian.
In 1995, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue her career in film and television, guest-starring on popular TV shows, including ER (1994) and Charmed (1998).
In 2001, Luttrell appeared in Anne Rice's TV movie The Feast of All Saints and the feature film Impostor (2001).
Before giving up on her acting career, Rachel auditioned for BADA and won a spot in its prestigious President's Group, studying at Balliol College in Oxford, UK.
Luttrell was cast in the role of Teyla Emmagan in the Sci-Fi Channel's spin-off series Stargate: Atlantis (2004),which ran for five seasons.
In 2011, she released her first CD, "I Wish You Love," collaborating with world-renowned musicians.
After Stargate: Atlantis, Luttrell made guest appearances on various TV shows and indulged her love of writing, something that has always brought her great joy and reward.
