Padmashree Professor Ram Gopal Bajaj is a renowned theatre personality in India, having served as the Director of the National School of Drama from November 1995 to September 2001. Prior to that, he was the Chief of the National School of Repertory Company from 1988 to 1994.
As a director, he has been responsible for many landmark productions with the NSD and its Repertory Company, showcasing his expertise in all aspects of theatre, including make-up, production design, and stage lighting. He is also an accomplished actor, having worked on stage, radio, television, and films.
During his tenure as Director, Professor Bajaj made significant contributions to the excellence of the National School of Drama, diversifying its activities and introducing new programs such as extension programs, publications, and documentation. He also conceived and organized Jashn-e-Bachpan, a national children's theatre festival, and introduced Bharat Rang Mahotsava, a major theatre festival of India.
Professor Bajaj has been a strong advocate for introducing theatre in the school education system and has been felicitated with several awards for his creative contributions to Indian theatre, including the Sangeet Natak Academy Award, Sahitya Kala Parishad Award, National Press India Award, and the Padma Sri award.
In addition to his academic and artistic pursuits, Professor Bajaj has held various positions in organizations and institutions in the field of theatre, film, and mass communication. He has been a member of the Executive Board, General Council, and Boards of several organizations, and has been nominated as a member on the boards and committees of various institutions.
Professor Bajaj has also served as a member of the Jury of National Film Awards and the Panorama Jury for the International Film Festival of India. He has worked as a Professor and held the Dr. S. Radhakrishnan Chair at the Central University of Hyderabad from 2002 to 2003.
He is one of the founder members of the Dishantar Theatre Group of Delhi and has been a member of the Indian National Commission for Cooperation with UNESCO, nominated by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
