He continued to hone his craft by joining a traveling stock company, where he honed his skills as a stage manager, meticulously coordinating the logistics and behind-the-scenes operations of each production.

As he grew in experience and confidence, Barker made the bold decision to relocate to the vibrant city of New York, where he secured a position as a stage manager, overseeing the smooth operation of various theatrical productions. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in his career, one that would eventually blossom into a successful acting career, as he began to take on roles on stage and screen, starting from 1910.

As the cinematic landscape began to take shape, Barker's fascination with the burgeoning motion picture industry drove him to seek out new opportunities. His path eventually led him to Bison Pictures, a prominent production company that was making a significant impact in the industry. Barker made the bold decision to relocate to California, where he would have the chance to work under the guidance of the legendary producer Thomas H. Ince, a pioneer in the field. Initially, Barker took on acting roles in films, but as he gained more experience and confidence, he began to shift his focus towards working behind the scenes as an assistant director.
