Biography

Richard Dembo, a renowned French director and screenwriter, was born on May 24, 1948. His remarkable career spanned several decades, with his debut film, La diagonale du fou, garnering international acclaim. This groundbreaking work earned Dembo an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1984, as well as numerous other prestigious accolades, including César and Prix Louis Delluc awards.

La diagonale du fou, a cinematic masterpiece, told the poignant story of a Jewish citizen of the USSR, skillfully portrayed by Michel Piccoli. Dembo's direction was widely praised, and the film's success cemented his status as a leading figure in the French film industry.

In 1993, Dembo directed L'instinct de l'ange, a powerful drama starring Hélène Vincent, Jean-Louis Trintignant, François Cluzet, and Lambert Wilson. Following a hiatus during which he did not direct any films, Dembo returned to the industry with La maison de Nina.
