Born in Georgetown, British Guiana, which is now known as Guyana, a remarkable individual with a fascinating life story began his journey. He pursued higher education at the Moco Teachers' Training College in Jamaica, graduating with honors, setting the stage for a successful career.
As a young professional, he started his teaching career as a headmaster in British Guiana and later became a master on staff at Trinidad College. His exceptional skills also qualified him as an Engineering Draughtsman. However, he eventually decided to leave teaching behind and move to Britain, with the intention of becoming a barrister.
However, he found himself penniless and was forced to take on various jobs while studying law, which led him to a series of unusual and unexpected occupations. He worked as a wrestler, professional boxer, artist model, journalist, and even a singer. He even considered pursuing a career as an opera singer but ultimately became involved in the acting scene in London.
After undergoing voice training, he made his first stage appearance in the play "Stevedore" alongside the renowned Paul Robeson at the Embassy Theatre in London. His breakthrough roles in "All God's Chillun" and "Emperor Jones" soon followed, cementing his status as a recognized name in the world of stage, radio, and television.
Concurrently, he began his film career, initially working with Ealing on the movie "Midshipman Easy". During World War II, he served as an A.R.P. (Air Raid Patrol) warden and also worked in a factory to contribute to the war effort.
