Chuter, a renowned theatre director and actor, was born in Carlton, Victoria, Australia, to Rita Spalding and British emigrant Harry Chuter, and was the only son in the family. Growing up in Williamstown, he was educated at various prestigious institutions, including RMIT, Victorian College of the Arts - School of Drama, St. Martin's Theatre School, Melbourne Theatre Company Youth Theatre, and the renowned Swinburne Film and Television School, where he graduated in 1983 with the AAV Award for his outstanding short film, The Mortal Coil.
Throughout his illustrious career, Chuter has been a prolific and award-winning theatre director, producing over 200 productions and collaborating with some of the world's leading theatre companies. In 1985, he produced and art-directed In From the Sea, followed by Letting Go and Tax in 1986. He also served as a production assistant on several short films, including Paradise Taxi, The Uniform, Double Exposure, Jacob's Dream, Inverted Kiss (unfinished),Best Wishes for the Baby's Arrival, and Heil Hawthorn, Oedipus Tex, J. Monroe, and Laughing With Joe. As an actor, Chuter appeared in numerous productions, including Tax, Carbon Black, Bedtime Story, Dust Off, Unnatural Causes, The Film School, Jacob's Dream, Test Pattern, Adflow, and Before & After Swinburne.
In 2017, Chuter completed filming his second feature film, A Beautiful Request, adapted from his original plays by playwright Alex Broun. Additionally, he was involved in the production of the Australian feature thriller Lillith, which wrapped filming on September 22nd, where Chuter served as co-producer.
