Robert N. Zagone is a renowned independent filmmaker and television director, celebrated for his distinctive independent feature films, including Read You Like a Book and The Stand-In, both starring the accomplished actors Karen Black, Tony Amendola, and Danny Glover.
Zagone is also recognized for his groundbreaking, guerrilla-style documentary, Drugs in the Tenderloin, as well as numerous film recordings of the vibrant musical culture of San Francisco, such as Go Ride the Music, featuring the iconic bands Jefferson Airplane and Quicksilver Messenger Service; A Night at the Family Dog, showcasing the legendary performances of the Grateful Dead, Santana, and Jefferson Airplane; Big Brother and the Holding Company with the incomparable Janis Joplin; and the infamous Bob Dylan Press Conference.
As a pioneer in capturing the cultural explosion of the 1960s in the San Francisco Bay Area, Zagone's work has had a lasting impact on the film industry.
With a career spanning decades, Zagone has received numerous accolades, including three Emmy Awards from the San Francisco chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and is a proud member of the Directors Guild of America.
In addition to his directing accomplishments, Zagone has also authored a memoir, Attack the Cameras! Musings of an Independent Film and TV Director, which was self-published in 2023.
