Roberta, a native of Toronto and former Sundance programmer, boasts an impressive body of work, having written, directed, and/or produced over 30 award-winning short films and several feature-length films for esteemed companies such as Fox Searchlight, AT&T, and the United Nations (UNFPA). These films have enjoyed international exposure, having played at renowned festivals worldwide, including the Sundance Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival, SXSW, and the Tokyo Short Film Festival, among others. Her films have garnered numerous "Best Of" awards and have even received theatrical releases and television broadcasts.
Roberta's directorial debut, Dani and Alice, a 2005 Fox Searchlight Directors Lab project, made its mark by playing at over 120 festivals globally and taking home the prestigious PlanetOut Best Drama Award in 2006. The film subsequently received a distribution deal with Wolfe Releasing and was featured on MTV Network's Logo as part of The Click List: Top 10 Videos.
Her subsequent short films, Happy Birthday and The Sibling Code, also enjoyed significant success, with Happy Birthday premiering in 2008 and The Sibling Code debuting at the Nantucket Film Festival in 2016.
In addition to her work in short-form filmmaking, Roberta has also made a name for herself through her feature-length films and television projects. For instance, she wrote, directed, and produced Family Prayers, a film commissioned by the UNFPA, which focuses on children, women, and reproductive rights in Egypt and Eastern Europe. Her current television project, Detox, is a half-hour comedy that explores toxic masculinity and was selected for the inaugural 2020 Canadian Creative Acceleration Program, "Searching For The Next Schitt's Creek".
Roberta is also the Co-Founder of The Blackhouse, an educational and celebratory space for Black filmmakers and their supporters at both the Sundance Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
