Biography

Royston Tickner was a renowned British actor, born Roy A. Tickner on September 8, 1922, in Leicester, England, to a family of tailors. Growing up, he was fascinated by the world of theatre and went on to train as an actor at the prestigious Scarborough repertory theatre.

Before embarking on his acting career, Tickner served in the Royal Navy during World War II, where he was stationed in the southern English counties, performing in various stage productions. In 1942, he joined the cast of H. F. Maltby's The Rotters alongside Frank Crawshaw and Preston Lockwood, and later took on the role of Robert in the presentation of du Maurier's Rebecca at the Ambassadors Theatre.

During the winter of 1942-43, Tickner served as the stage manager for the production, which marked the London début of Eileen Herlie. The following spring, he married Gwendoline Bonde at Leicester, and the couple went on to have a long and fulfilling life together.

After a brief hiatus from acting, Tickner returned to the stage in 1958, and went on to accumulate an impressive list of television credits, including appearances in popular shows such as The Avengers, Z-Cars, Doctor Who, Gideon's Way, The Baron, King of the River, The Troubleshooters, Dixon of Dock Green, Timeslip, The Flaxton Boys, Out of the Unknown, Emmerdale Farm, Porridge, Last of the Summer Wine, Angels, Return of the Saint, Rogue's Rock, Secret Army, Danger UXB, George and Mildred, The Enigma Files, Kessler, Minder, Reilly, Ace of Spies, Just Good Friends, and One by One.

Tickner's film credits include roles in Michael Mann's The Keep (1983) and Jim Goddard's Hitler's SS: Portrait in Evil (1985),showcasing his versatility as a talented actor. Throughout his long and distinguished career, Tickner left an indelible mark on the world of entertainment, and his legacy continues to be celebrated by fans and fellow actors alike.
