Run Run Shaw was born on October 4, 1907, in Shanghai, China, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey that would take him to the forefront of the film and television industry.
Alongside his brother, Runme Shaw, he founded the Shaw Organization in 1926, and later, the Shaw Studios, formerly known as the South Seas Film Studio, in 1930. This marked the start of a legacy that would span decades.
Fast forward to 1967, Shaw established Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) in Hong Kong, which would go on to become a multi-billion dollar television empire. TVB played a pivotal role in shaping the television landscape, producing numerous television sitcoms, drama series, documentaries, and singing performances, as well as the popular variety show "Enjoy Yourself Tonight," which drew parallels with "Saturday Night Live."
Throughout his illustrious career, Shaw has expanded his business empire, acquiring notable establishments such as Macy's and the Shaw Tower at Cathedral Place in Canada. His philanthropic efforts have been equally impressive, with donations totaling billions of dollars to charities, schools, and hospitals.
In recognition of his contributions, many Hong Kong buildings bear his name, a testament to his enduring legacy.
Shaw has also made regular appearances on TVB programs, including their Chinese New Year celebration shows. During these programs, he would often lead an "awakening" ceremony, which precedes the iconic Chinese Lion Dance. This tradition has been a staple of his annual celebrations, and he has continued to lead it throughout the years.
