Rupert Alexander Lloyd Grint, the eldest son of Joanne Parsons and Nigel Grint, who operated a business dealing in memorabilia, was born in Harlow, Essex, England. He is the first of five siblings, consisting of one brother and three sisters.
Growing up in Hertfordshire, a county adjacent to London, provided Rupert with a convenient commute to Leavesden Film Studios. Prior to successfully auditioning for the Harry Potter films, Rupert attended Richard Hale Secondary School in Hertford, where he took an active interest in school plays, being cast as Rumplestilskin in the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. Additionally, he was a regular attendee at weekend drama classes at Top Hat Stage School in Hertford.
Rupert's time at school was limited, as he was required on set for the Harry Potter films, where all child actors received four hours of daily tutoring to meet legal requirements. During the summer of 2004, he took his GCSE exams and completed his formal education.
