Sally Potter's filmmaking journey began at the tender age of fourteen, when she created her first 8mm film. Since then, she has written and directed seven feature films, numerous short films, including the critically acclaimed THRILLER and PLAY, and a television series. Her impressive body of work also includes directing opera, such as Carmen for the English National Opera in 2007, as well as various live performances. With a background in choreography, music, performance art, and experimental film, Potter's creative endeavors have consistently pushed boundaries and defied conventions.
Her feature films, which have garnered widespread recognition, include ORLANDO (1992),an audacious adaptation of Virginia Woolf's timeless novel, and subsequent films such as THE TANGO LESSON (1996),THE MAN WHO CRIED (2000),YES (2004),RAGE (2009),and GINGER & ROSA (2012). These cinematic masterpieces have not only earned her international acclaim but have also been recognized by prestigious award bodies, including the Academy Awards and BAFTAs.
Throughout her illustrious career, Potter has collaborated with some of the most renowned actors of our time, showcasing her innovative approach to storytelling and her willingness to take risks. Her remarkable body of work has been celebrated with over forty international awards and has been the subject of full career retrospectives at esteemed institutions such as the BFI Southbank, MoMA, and the Cinematheque.
In addition to her numerous accolades, Potter was honored with an OBE in 2012 and published her book, Naked Cinema - Working with Actors, through Faber & Faber in March 2014. She co-founded her production company, Adventure Pictures, with producer Christopher Sheppard, solidifying her position as a visionary filmmaker and a driving force in the industry.
