Born Allison Samuel Hall in Carrollton, Ohio, he received a prestigious education, graduating from the esteemed institutions of Dartmouth and Yale. Prior to his illustrious writing career, Hall served his country with honor, having been a veteran of the grueling World War II Battle of the Bulge.
In 1952, Hall tied the knot with actress Grayson Hall, and their union would prove to be a fruitful one in both personal and professional realms. His first major writing endeavor was the iconic gothic soap opera Dark Shadows, which he joined in 1967. It was during his tenure on this show that he met his writing partner, the talented Gordon Russell.
When Dark Shadows was eventually cancelled, Hall and Russell reunited as head-writers on the popular soap opera One Life to Live, taking over the reins from the show's creator, Agnes Nixon. During their time on the series, they received two Daytime Emmy Award nominations in 1980 and 1981 for their outstanding work. Hall's impressive legacy on One Life to Live includes the creation of memorable characters such as Clint, Bo, and Asa Buchanan, as well as the long-running feud between Viki and Dorian, which would span decades. Additionally, his script for the iconic Karen Wolek on the witness stand-arc earned actress Judith Light an Emmy Award and launched her successful career in prime time television.
Throughout his career, Hall worked alongside his wife on both Dark Shadows and One Life To Live, and their son, Matthew Hall, followed in his father's footsteps, serving as a script writer under his guidance on One Life To Live and the 1991 revival of Dark Shadows. In addition to his 10-year tenure as head writer on One Life To Live, Hall also wrote for General Hospital, which premiered in 1963, and Santa Barbara, which debuted in 1984.
