Sam Patrello, a renowned American comedian, was born in The Bronx to a family deeply rooted in show business. His journey in the entertainment industry began at a remarkably young age of six, when he started performing on stage.
Throughout his career, Patrello had the opportunity to showcase his comedic talents on various television programs, including The Colgate Comedy Hour, NBC's Four Star Revue, Texaco Star Theater, and ABC's Stop the Music. He also appeared on several local New York City quiz shows and variety shows.
In 1952, Patrello relocated to Los Angeles, California, where he teamed up with singer Duke Mitchell to form a successful nightclub act. This act was particularly notable for its imitation of the popular Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis duo. Patrello's impressive impressions also extended to other film stars and cartoon characters, while Mitchell would sing in the styles of various notable singers, including Frankie Laine, Vaughn Monroe, and Billy Daniels.
For the climax of their show, Patrello and Mitchell would surprise the audience by announcing that they would now perform as Martin and Lewis, with Patrello playing Martin and Mitchell playing Lewis. This unexpected twist would often leave the audience in stitches.
In addition to his work with Mitchell, Patrello also appeared in the low-budget jungle-themed comedy film Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla, alongside the legendary Bela Lugosi and the chimpanzee Cheeta from the Tarzan film series.
By 1991, Patrello had relocated to Pittsburgh, where he ran a family-oriented comedy club called The Nut House. Despite his own success, Patrello remained committed to mentoring young comedians, including Richard Pryor and Dennis Miller, who was a native of Pittsburgh.
Sadly, Patrello passed away on August 15, 2009, at the age of 74, due to complications from colon cancer.
