Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Helberg's early years were marked by a move to Toledo, Ohio, where he spent his formative years. Later, he relocated to New York City, where he pursued his passion for acting by enrolling in the prestigious Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, where he had the privilege of studying under the guidance of renowned instructors John and Lee Strasberg.
Furthermore, Helberg's training continued at the Neighborhood Playhouse, where he honed his craft under the tutelage of the highly respected Sanford Meisner. This rigorous training regimen provided Helberg with a solid foundation in the fundamentals of acting, setting the stage for his future success.
In addition to his formal education, Helberg's creative impulses led him to co-found the improvisational group, The Downtown Express, which quickly gained popularity, performing at esteemed venues such as the Bitter End and the Improv. The group even had a home theater in Greenwich Village, where they delighted audiences with their nightly performances.
Upon arriving in Los Angeles, Helberg became one of the original members of the esteemed Groundlings, a comedy troupe that has launched the careers of numerous notable performers.
