Biography

Sara Dosa is a renowned nonfiction filmmaker, celebrated for her thought-provoking works that delve into the intricate relationships between humans and the natural world. Her esteemed directing credits have garnered numerous accolades, including a Peabody Award and a Directors' Guild of America Award, as well as nominations for an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, and an Independent Spirit Award.

Throughout her career, Dosa's films have been showcased at esteemed festivals worldwide, such as Sundance, SXSW, New Directors/New Films, CPH:DOX, and Visions du Réel, among others. Her work has also been featured in partnership with prestigious institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, and the Louvre.

One of her most recent and critically acclaimed projects is the Academy Award-nominated documentary "Fire of Love," which premiered at Sundance 2022 and was acquired by National Geographic Films. This cinematic masterpiece tells the captivating story of French volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft and has received widespread recognition, winning numerous awards, including the DGA Outstanding Direction in a Documentary Film and the Critics' Choice Award for Best Archival Documentary.

Dosa's impressive directing portfolio also includes "The Last Season," a verité portrait of two Oregon veterans turned wild mushroom hunters, which earned an Indie-Spirited Award nomination in 2015. Her other notable directing credits include "The Seer & The Unseen," a fabulist portrait of an Icelandic woman in communication with spirits of nature, which won the Golden Gate Award in 2019.

As a producer, Dosa has worked on several influential projects, including the Peabody-winning documentary "Audrie & Daisy" (Sundance / Netflix, 2016) and the Peabody and Emmy-nominated documentary "Survivors" (IDFA / POV, 2018). Her additional producing credits include the Academy Award-nominated documentary "The Edge of Democracy" (Sundance / Netflix, 2019) and "An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power" (Sundance / Paramount, 2017).

In 2018, Dosa was recognized as one of the inaugural class of DOCNYC's "40 under 40" and was inducted into the Academy of Motion Picture's Documentary Branch. She holds a double major in sociology and anthropology from Wesleyan University and a joint master's degree in cultural anthropology and international development studies from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Dosa currently resides and works in California.
