Born in Uganda, Hicks spent his early years in Kenya, residing just outside Nairobi until the tender age of ten. At this pivotal moment, his family made the bold decision to relocate, first to England and later, when he was 14, to Adelaide, Australia. This significant move would ultimately shape the course of his life and career.
Hicks' academic pursuits led him to Flinders University of South Australia, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts with Honors degree in 1975. His outstanding achievements did not go unnoticed, as he was later awarded an honorary doctorate in 1997.
Throughout his illustrious career, Hicks has been affiliated with prestigious organizations, including the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. His personal life is marked by a strong partnership with his wife and collaborator, Kerry Heysen, with whom he resides in Adelaide, South Australia.
Together, they maintain their own Yacca Paddock Vineyard on the picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula. This endeavor has allowed them to cultivate a passion for wine and the natural beauty of their surroundings. The couple is blessed with two sons, Scott Heysen and Jethro Heysen-Hicks, who have undoubtedly inherited their parents' creative spirit.
In addition to his impressive body of work in the film industry, Hicks is also a talented photographer. His artistic endeavors have been showcased in three exhibitions, a testament to his dedication and passion for the craft.
