Scott Reynolds was born in Auckland, New Zealand in 1968. His parents worked in Hollywood Cinema in the Auckland suburbs, which would later have a profound impact on his life. One of his earliest memories was watching the classic films "The Incredible Shrinking Man" (1957) and "A Fistful of Dollars" (1964),which sparked an experiment in the origins of his fascination with the world of cinema.
As a teenager, Scott Reynolds began working as a projectionist at Hollywood Cinema, allowing him to study the process of movie-making up close. This experience would later influence his own filmmaking style. His principal influences include the legendary directors Kubrick, Scorsese, Raimi, and Hitchcock.
In 1992, Scott Reynolds created his first short film, "The Minute," which was selected for the prestigious London Film Festival. Three years later, he completed his second short film, "A Game with No Rules" (1994),which was officially selected for "Un Certain Regard" at the Cannes Film Festival. This achievement was followed by the Gold Palm award in the drama category at the Chicago Film Festival.
Scott Reynolds' first feature film, "The Ugly" (1997),was a suspenseful thriller produced in Auckland and released in 1997. This marked the beginning of his journey as a filmmaker, and his unique style and influences would continue to shape his work in the years to come.
