Sergei Makovetsky is a renowned Russian actor, celebrated for his outstanding performances in notable films such as "Duska" (2007) directed by Jos Stelling and "12" (2007) directed by Nikita Mikhalkov.
Born Sergei Vasilevich Makovetsky on June 13, 1958, in Darnitsa, a suburb of Kiev, Soviet Union (now Kyiv, Ukraine),he was raised by a single mother who objected to his pursuit of a sports career. Despite his talent as a swimmer and water polo player, he was rejected by the Kiev Theatrical College and instead worked as a stage decorator for a year before moving to Moscow to pursue an acting career.
In Moscow, Makovetsky faced numerous rejections from acting schools before being drafted into the Soviet Army. However, he cleverly used his acting skills to feign serious illnesses, ultimately allowing him to avoid military service. His persistence and determination eventually paid off, and he was accepted into the Shchukin Theatrical School of Vakhtangov Theatre in Moscow, graduating in 1980 under the guidance of renowned actress Alla Kazanskaya.
Since 1980, Makovetsky has been a member of the Vakhtangov Theatre troupe, collaborating with esteemed actors such as Mikhail Ulyanov, Vasiliy Lanovoy, Yuliya Borisova, Lyudmila Maksakova, Alla Kazanskaya, Irina Kupchenko, Lyudmila Tselikovskaya, Mariya Aronova, Marianna Vertinskaya, Elena Dobronravova, Yuriy Yakovlev, Vladimir Etush, Vyacheslav Shalevich, Nikolai Timofeyev, Aleksandr Grave, Vladimir Simonov, Vladimir Koval, Viktor Zozulin, Evgeniy Karelskikh, Aleksandr Koznov, Vladimir Vdovichenkov, Mikhail Vaskov, Andrei Zaretsky, Nonna Grishaeva, Mariya Aronova, Elena Sotnikova, Anna Dubrovskaya, Olga Tumaykina, Maksim Sukhanov, and Viktor Dobronravov, among others.
Throughout his illustrious career, Makovetsky has delivered memorable performances on stage, including iconic roles such as Iago in Shakespeare's "Othello," Gorodnichy in "Revizor" (1990s),and Gan-za-Lin in "Zoikina kvartira" based on the eponymous play by Mikhail A. Bulgakov. In 1998, he created the title character in Molière's "Amfitrion," which enjoyed a nine-season run. Since the 2003 premiere of "Chaika," Makovetsky has received widespread acclaim for his performances as Trigorin opposite Lyudmila Maksakova and Yuriy Yakovlev, as well as his work in several stage productions directed by Roman Viktyuk.
Sergei Makovetsky has been honored with the title of People's Actor of Russia and has received numerous awards for his contributions to the world of theater and film. He is one of the highest-paid actors in contemporary Russia, and continues to reside and work in Moscow.
