Sergey Gazarov's journey in the world of theater and film began in 1980 when he graduated from the Russian University of Theatrical Arts named after Lunacharsky, with a degree in acting from the art workshop of Oleg Tabakov.
During his studies, Gazarov was an active participant in the foundation of the Moscow Theater Studio "Tabakerka" under the guidance of Oleg Tabakov. After graduating, he was invited to join the Moscow State Theatre "Sovremennik", where he went on to perform numerous roles in plays by renowned writers such as Shakespeare, Moliere, Olby, Saltykov-Shedrin, Ostrovsky, Bulgakov, and Gogol.
Gazarov's career as an actor and director was marked by numerous milestones. In 1990, he made his directorial debut with the film "Crazy", which won the Grand-Prix Award at the Young European Filmmakers Festival in Angers, France. The same year, he founded a movie company called "Nikita And Pyotr".
In 1991, Gazarov staged the play "The Government Inspector" ("Revizor") at Oleg Tabakov Theatre-Studio, which won the Union Of Theatrical Workers' Prize for the best director's debut of the year. He continued to work in film and theater, producing and directing the TV version of the philosophical parable "Helen & The Navigator" in 1993, which received the award for best TV film of the year.
Gazarov's work in film and theater continued to flourish throughout the 1990s. In 1996, he produced and directed the movie "The Government Inspector" ("Revizor"),a co-production between "Nikita and Pyotr" and "Most-Group Company", which received critical acclaim and was nominated for several awards at the Montreal World Film Festival. He took home the awards for Best Artistic Contribution and Innovation.
From 1998 to 2001, Gazarov worked as the principal director at the Moscow Drama Theater after Dzhigarhanyan, where he significantly renewed the troupe and staged several widely accepted plays, including "The Homecoming" by H.Pinter and "The Government Inspector" by N.Gogol.
In 2015, Gazarov began teaching theatrical arts at the Academy of Cinematographic and Theater Arts after N. Mikhalkov. He directed the graduation project "Metamorphosis", featuring 9 mini-plays based on the works of A. Chekhov and I. Bunin.
Since 2016, Gazarov has been staging a new play by A. Galin "Parade" at the "Sovremennik" Theater in Moscow.
