Sevda Alizadeh, professionally known as Sevdaliza, is a talented Iranian-Dutch singer and songwriter born on September 1, 1987. Her diverse cultural heritage includes Azerbaijani, Russian, and Persian roots, and she is fluent in five languages: Persian, Dutch, English, French, and Portuguese.
Sevdaliza's music is a unique fusion of trip hop, experimental pop, and alternative R&B, drawing inspiration from various sources. Her visually striking music videos have garnered international attention, with Complex nominating her video for "Sirens of the Caspian" as one of the top ten videos of the year in 2014.
Born in Tehran, Iran, and based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Sevdaliza moved to the Netherlands with her family at the age of five. She left home at 16 to pursue a basketball scholarship and eventually played on the Dutch national basketball team. After graduating with a master's degree in communications, she began her music career at the age of 24, teaching herself to sing and use Ableton.
Sevdaliza's debut single "Clear Air" was released in March 2014, followed by "Sirens of the Caspian" and "Backseat Love". Her extended play (EP) "The Suspended Kid" was issued in January 2015, which she worked on for over a year and a half. The title of the EP is about how people responded to Sevdaliza in social situations, and it was produced by Sevdaliza and Rotterdam-based producer Mucky.
Sevdaliza's second EP "Children of Silk" was released in November 2015, featuring the lead single "Marilyn Monroe". The song has been characterized as trip hop and was accompanied by a music video released in March 2016. In May, Sevdaliza released a short film titled "The Formula", which tells the story of how the pain of losing an unborn child destroyed balance in marriage and leads to tragedy.
In January 2017, Sevdaliza released her first Persian-language song "Bebin" in response to Executive Order 13769. She stated that she wanted to use her music as a way to express her feelings and connect with others who may be going through similar experiences.
Sevdaliza's debut studio album "ISON" was released in April 2017, and is named after Comet ISON, a sun-grazing comet. The album features the singles "Hero", "Amandine Insensible", and "Human". In January 2018, Sevdaliza released a new track "Soul Syncable" and it was released on the day of the super blue moon.
In February, she released the track "Human Nature", which is part of her EP "The Calling", released in March. In May, she released a Portuguese-language version of her track "Human", titled "Humana", to celebrate and thank its 10 million views.
On March 8, 2019, Sevdaliza released a new single "Darkest Hour", which marked the beginning of a new musical chapter in her career. It was succeeded by the non-album single "Martyr" the following month.
Sevdaliza then released three singles in 2020, "Oh My God", "Lamp Lady", and "Joanna", before announcing her second studio album "Shabrang", which released on August 28, 2020. "Shabrang" also features the single "Human Nature", which also appeared on her 2018 extended play "The Calling".
Throughout her career, Sevdaliza's music has been inspired by ideas of womanhood, identity, and motherhood.
