Sherwood Hu, a renowned director, producer, and scholar, has had a profound impact on the world of entertainment. Born with a passion for the arts, Hu began his professional career in theatre, studying under the tutelage of Joseph Papp at The Public Theater in New York. He went on to earn his Master of Arts degree from New York State University and a Ph.D. in directing from the University of Hawaii.
Hu's impressive resume boasts an array of critically acclaimed works. His lavish stage production, The Legend of Prince Lanling, received an Honorable Mention from the Kennedy Arts Center, and was later adapted into his first feature film, Warrior Lanling, an award-winning epic about an ancient Chinese myth. His first English-language film, Lani Loa - The Passage, was presented by none other than Francis Ford Coppola.
In 2005, Hu returned to China and founded his own production company, Hus Entertainment. He then produced and directed a 40-episode TV series, Purple Jade, for CCTV, and the 25th episode, Fighting Peking, was rated #1 national TV series at Beijing Satellite TV.
Hu's adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet, Prince of the Himalayas, received widespread critical acclaim, earning the Best Film Award at the Calabria International Film Festival in Italy, as well as awards from the Monaco Film Festival, Chinese American Film Festival, American Shakespeare Association, and Beijing International Film Festival. The film enjoyed a successful run in New York City and was chosen as an archive film by the Rubin Museum.
In addition to his work in film and television, Hu has also ventured into the realm of 3D filmmaking. His collaboration with Shanghai Film Studio and the NBA resulted in the award-winning film, Amazing, which won the "Golden Lotus Award" for best picture at the 2013 Macao International Film Festival.
Currently, Hu is completing the final installment of his trilogy, Lord of Shanghai (Warrior Lanling/Prince of the Himalayas),and producing a new film, Big Bombing. His impressive career has earned him the titles of "Eastern Scholar" and "Distinguished Expert of Shanghai," and he currently serves as the President of Film and Television School at Shanghai Theatre Academy.
Hu is also the founder of MIA (Media Image Art) Center, where he is dedicated to the study of a new entertainment art form that combines film, theatre, computer arts, digital science, and high-tech engineering in a dome environment.
