Biography

Siegfried Breuer, a charismatic and sophisticated Viennese thespian, was renowned for his captivating portrayals of refined, charming scoundrels and libertines. As the son of a renowned Wagnerian singer, Breuer was nurtured in the world of music and the performing arts from a young age. In 1924, he began his formal training as an actor at Vienna's prestigious Academy for Music and the Performing Arts, where he had the privilege of studying alongside distinguished colleagues such as Paula Wessely and Käthe Gold.

Breuer's early career was marked by his impressive stage presence, and he made his leading role debut under the direction of the illustrious Max Reinhardt in the production of 'The Prince of Homburg' in Berlin. In 1935, he joined the esteemed ensemble cast of the Deutsches Theater, further solidifying his reputation as a talented and versatile actor.

As the late 1930s unfolded, Breuer's screen presence became increasingly in demand, and he began to hone his unique style of suave, yet cunning, bon vivant. His standout performances in films such as Gustav Ucicky's 'Der Postmeister' (1940) and Helmut Käutner's 'Romanze in Moll' (1943) showcased his remarkable range and ability to convey a sense of effortless charm.

In addition to his film work, Breuer also demonstrated his operatic prowess, bringing his distinctive Viennese charm to roles such as Immortal Waltz (1939) and the remake of Die Fledermaus (1946). His collaboration with director Carol Reed in The Third Man (1949) saw him play the pivotal role of Popescu, a small but crucial part that added depth to the narrative.

Throughout his life, Breuer was known for his love of fine cigars and his impressive collection of cigarette cases. Tragically, his life was cut short when he succumbed to complications related to pneumonia at the age of 47. During his lifetime, he was married six times, including to the renowned Austrian actress Maria Andergast.
