Choi Siwon was born in Seoul, South Korea, and raised in a strict Protestant family. His talents were scouted in the Starlight Casting System in 2003, but his parents initially disapproved of his pursuing an entertainment career. After consideration, his parents allowed him to sign with SM Entertainment, where he was trained in singing, acting, and dancing.
Choi made his first appearance in a music video in 2003 and later appeared in a short drama, Precious Family, in 2004. In 2005, he officially debuted as a member of the boy group Super Junior, performing the group's first single "TWINS (Knock Out)" on SBS's Popular Songs.
Choi is known for his frequent appearances on variety shows, including Love Letter, and has been a popular endorser for many items in South Korea. He has also acted in several dramas, including 18 vs. 29, Spring Waltz, and Legend of Hyang Dang, and has appeared in the film A Battle of Wits alongside Hong Kong actor Andy Lau.
In his personal life, Choi continued his education after his debut with Super Junior, attending Hyun Dae High School and later Inha University. He is also a drummer and has performed with his senior label mates, The TRAX. Choi is nicknamed Simba by his band mate Kim Heechul and is known for his bright smile and horse-like appearance.
