Sophie is a multifaceted British American film director and documentary cinematographer with a diverse range of projects under her belt. Her extensive experience has taken her to some of the most remote and breathtaking locations around the world, including Antarctica, the North Pole, and the Himalayas.
One of her most notable documentary films is "77 Below", which was shot on the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica and features artist Lita Albuquerque and her ephemeral art installation "Stellar Axis". This award-winning film showcases Sophie's ability to capture the beauty and majesty of these extreme environments.
Another notable documentary is "Talking to the Air: The Horses of the Last Forbidden Kingdom", which was shot on the border with Tibet in the high Himalaya. This film is a testament to Sophie's dedication to capturing the stories and cultures of rare and vanishing equine populations.
In addition to her documentary work, Sophie has also ventured into narrative filmmaking with her debut feature film "Dogstar", a tragic love story between an otherworldly recluse and a misfit junkie. This film was praised by critics for its "pleasingly sensuous" and "well-crafted, winsome fairy tale" approach.
Sophie is also the co-director and cinematographer of the upcoming documentary "Daughters of the Curved Moon", which was shot in remote villages in West Nepal. She has also worked on another upcoming documentary directed by Stephen Fisher, entitled "Elders Speak", which explores the Paiute Shoshone in the Owen's Valley.
Currently, Sophie is working on several projects, including the documentary "Jorgo", which follows the maverick and youthful horsemen of Kyrgyzstan. She is also developing a story about the Camarillo family of California and the legacy of their rare White Horses.
In addition to her film work, Sophie co-owns and runs Horsefly Films, a production company based in Los Angeles. Through Horsefly Films, Sophie is producing a series of documentaries focused on rare horses and vanishing equine cultures. Her award-winning films, including "Path to Glory", "Tarpan", "Of Gods and Kings", and "Talking to the Air", are available on the Rare Equine Trust website.
