Athanasiou's impressive accolades include being invited to the 3rd Berlinale Talent Campus, and his short and feature-length films have garnered numerous awards at international film festivals.
His debut feature film, "DOS, a love story in reverse..." (2011),received widespread recognition, taking home several awards and earning official selection in over 10 prestigious international festivals, including the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival, the Hong-Kong Eastern Film Festival, the Gijón International Film Festival, and the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, among others.
In addition to his work in film, Athanasiou has made significant contributions to contemporary theatre, with performances and plays showcased at esteemed festivals such as the Festival d'Automne à Paris, the Kunsten Festival des Artes in Brussels, the Wiener Festwochen in Vienna, and the Athens Festival, among others.
He has collaborated with prominent groups, including the Theseum Ensemble, the Greek National Theatre, the Onassis Cultural Foundation, and Theatre Group Opera, among others.
Athanasiou's latest project, "Alpha" (2015),has made history by introducing crowd-funding to Greece for the first time. This innovative Transmedia Cinematic Performance seamlessly blends cinema, ancient drama, performance, and live music to retell the myth of Antigone in the 21st century.
