Biography

Stephanie Murphy, born Đặng Thị Ngọc Dung on September 16, 1978, is an American politician who served as the U.S. representative for Florida's 7th congressional district from 2017 to 2023, as a member of the Democratic Party.

Murphy's district encompassed a significant portion of downtown and northern Orlando, as well as the entirety of Winter Park, Maitland, Sanford, and Altamonte Springs. Her impressive career in politics began with her defeat of incumbent Republican John Mica in 2016.

Born in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, in 1978, Murphy left the country with her family in 1979 and grew up in Northern Virginia. She went on to attend the College of William & Mary and Georgetown University, after which she worked as a national security specialist at the United States Department of Defense, an executive at Sungate Capital, and a business professor at Rollins College.

Notably, Murphy became the first Vietnamese-American woman, first Vietnamese-American Democrat, and the second Vietnamese-American overall to be elected to Congress, following in the footsteps of South Vietnam-born Republican Joseph Cao of Louisiana.

On December 20, 2021, Murphy announced her decision not to run for reelection to a fourth term in 2022.
