Steven A. Egger, a renowned American professor of criminology and author, had a distinguished academic and professional career. He began his educational journey by earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University, followed by a Master of Science degree in the same field from the same institution. His academic pursuits continued as he pursued a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University, where he wrote a dissertation titled "An Analysis of the Serial Murder Phenomenon and the Law Enforcement Response".

Throughout his career, Egger made significant contributions to the field of criminology. He worked as a homicide investigator, utilizing his expertise to solve crimes and bring justice to victims and their families. Additionally, he served as the project director of the Homicide Assessment and Lead Tracking System (HALT) for the State of New York, a pioneering project that aimed to improve the response to serial murders.

Egger's academic career was marked by his tenure as a Professor of Criminology at the University of Houston Clear Lake and Professor Emeritus of Criminal Justice at the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS). During this time, he authored several influential books, including "Serial Murder: An Elusive Phenomenon" (1990),"The Killers Among Us: Examination of Serial Murder and Its Investigations, Second Edition" (2001),and "The Need to Kill: Inside the World of the Serial Killer" (2003).
