Steven Brown, a world traveler, was born in Chicago but now resides in Mexico, specifically near Oaxaca, as of 2010. With a rich history of living in Europe for over a decade, he has spent more than ten years residing on the continent. In 1970, Brown's exceptional amateur super 8 film, a rendition of "Frankenstein," earned him an award in New York City.
However, Brown is more widely recognized as a multi-instrumentalist musician, showcasing a fondness for the saxophone, piano, and clarinet. He co-founded the avant-garde musical group Tuxedomoon in San Francisco, alongside Blaine L. Reininger. The group relocated to Europe in the early 1980s, establishing its base in Brussels before disbanding and dispersing across the globe in the 1990s. During this period, Brown relocated to Mexico.
In addition to his musical endeavors, Brown is also an accomplished actor, having appeared in both film and theater productions. Some of his notable performances include the play "Zoo story" by Hal Ashby, staged in Brussels in 1983, and the film "Salon Mexico" directed by Jose Luis Garcia Agraz, released in 1996. Brown remains active in the acting world, as well as a writer and musician.
In 2001, he published "Stories from Mexico" through Rowhouse Press, a collection of his written works. As a solo artist, musician, and member of Tuxedomoon and Nine Rain, Brown continues to create and perform music. In 2010, he received a nomination for an Ariel, the Mexican equivalent of an Academy Award, for the original music he composed for "El Informe Toledo," a documentary directed by Albino Alvarez and centered on Oaxaca artist Francisco Toledo.
