Saswata Chatterjee's ancestral roots can be traced back to his father, Shailendra Chattopadhyay, a prominent figure in his family tree, and his mother, Manimala Devi, whose influence had a profound impact on his life.
As he ventured into the world of academia, Saswata made the decision to enroll in Calcutta Medical College in the year 1953, marking the beginning of a seven-year journey that would ultimately lead to the attainment of a Master's degree in Medicine, coupled with a Bachelor of Surgery, and subsequently, licensure as a medical practitioner in the year 1960.
Saswata's academic pursuits came to a close, and he made the conscious decision to channel his acquired knowledge and abilities towards a career in the medical profession. It was during this period that he opted to utilize his skills in the realm of medicine by taking up a role with the esteemed Civil Defence organization. As he threw himself into his work, his unwavering dedication and exceptional expertise soon began to garner recognition from the very highest echelons of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. As a direct result of his outstanding performance, the corporation was compelled to extend an offer of employment to Saswata, thus marking the beginning of a new chapter in his professional journey.
Saswata's pursuits extend far beyond the realm of his medical profession, as he is also deeply drawn to the captivating world of theatre. Under the mentorship of the esteemed Bengali theatre and film personality, Jnanesh Mukherjee, Saswata embarked on a journey to nurture his passion for amateur theatre, marking the inception of his foray into the world of acting. This initial foray ultimately led him to take the bold step of venturing onto the silver screen, thereby bringing his acting aspirations to life.
Saswata has been an integral part of the Indian People's Theatre Association, a pioneering cultural organization in India, throughout his illustrious career. This esteemed association has been a significant platform for him to hone his skills and make a meaningful impact in the world of art and entertainment.
As a proud father, Saswata has been blessed with two talented sons who have followed in his footsteps to make a name for themselves in the entertainment industry. His elder son, Saswata Chatterjee, is a highly accomplished Bengali actor who has carved out a successful career for himself in the world of cinema. On the other hand, his younger son has chosen to base himself in the United States, where he is also making a mark in the entertainment industry.
