Suhasini was born in Patna, where she spent the early part of her childhood, before being brought up by her mother, Vijaya Mulay, a renowned documentary filmmaker and film historian, after her father's untimely passing when she was just three years old. This loss had a profound impact on her life, and it was her mother's influence that initially sparked her interest in films.
In 1965, Suhasini's life took a dramatic turn when she was chosen by Pears Soap to be its model. This ad film caught the attention of acclaimed filmmaker Mrinal Sen, who subsequently signed her for his 1969 film, Bhuvan Shome. Although Bhuvan Shome proved to be a significant milestone in Indian cinema, Suhasini decided not to pursue acting as a full-time career. Instead, she enrolled at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, to pursue a course in agricultural technology with a specialization in soil chemistry and microbiology.
In addition to her agricultural studies, Suhasini also obtained a degree in mass communication, with a major in film, radio, TV, journalism, and print. Her academic pursuits took her to Canada, where she spent several years honing her skills and knowledge.
After completing her education, Suhasini returned to India in 1975 and began her journey in the film industry as an assistant to the legendary Satyajit Ray in the Bengali film Jana Aranya. She then went on to work as an assistant director on Mrigaya, under the guidance of Mrinal Sen. Since then, she has been actively involved in film production and has made over 60 documentaries, earning national awards for four of them.
Thirty years after her debut in Bhuvan Shome, Suhasini made a triumphant comeback to mainstream Bollywood cinema with Gulzar's Hu Tu Tu, for which she received the national award for best supporting actress. Since then, she has been playing mother roles in Bollywood films and has also worked on a television serial, Jaane Kya Baat Hui.
Suhasini's latest film, PEEDA, directed by Hemant Verma, has recently received the best feature film award at the FOG film festival in the USA.
