Susan's theatrical career began after graduating from Trinity College in the 1970s, when she started her long association with the Gate Theatre. Since then, she has played leading roles in numerous productions, including plays by Shakespeare, Wilde, Coward, Ibsen, Beckett, Ayckbourn, Williams, Russell, Hampton, Frank McGuinness, and Brian Friel, as well as adaptations from Dickens and Austen.
She has appeared in many iconic roles, such as May in Footfalls during the celebrated Beckett Festival in New York and London, and filmed Footfalls for the Beckett on Film project. Her work at the Abbey Theatre includes Six Characters in Search of an Author, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Hedda Gabler, and The Duty Master.
More recently, Susan has appeared as Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest, Mrs. Bennett in Pride and Prejudice at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, and Jane Eyre, all directed by Alan Stanford. She has also worked with Lia Williams in The Eccentricities of a Nightingale, directed by Dominic Cooke, and in Martin Crimp's adaptation of The Misanthrope, Pygmalion, directed by Robin LeFevre, and The Constant Wife, directed by Alan Stanford.
In addition to her theatre work, Susan has appeared in numerous films and television shows, including the role of Nora Clancy in Fair City, many one-off dramas, the mini-series Rebel Heart (BBC),Bachelor's Walk (Accomplice/RTE),Proof (Subotica/RTE),The Big Bow Wow (RTE),and Fintan Connolly's feature The Trouble With Sex.
She has also made appearances on radio, including Emma Brown, Nights in the Gardens of Spain, and Hotel du Lac for RTE. Susan has appeared in several productions at the Project Arts Centre, including The Goat, directed by Michael Barker Caven, and Teja Verdes for b*spoke Productions.
Her most recent theatre appearances include Brian Friel's recent version of Hedda Gabler, directed by Anna Mackmin, and Present Laughter, directed by Alan Stanford, both at the Gate Theatre, Dublin.
