Biography

Thomas Bennett Sim White, a celebrated blues vocalist, emerged onto the scene in the charming city of Edinburgh, Scotland, his birthplace. This talented individual left an indelible mark on the music world with his unmistakable gravel-voiced tone, a characteristic that set him apart from his contemporaries. With a career that spanned an impressive multitude of decades, White's remarkable journey was filled with numerous highlights.

During the 1960s, White's musical endeavors took him to the recording studio, where he collaborated with the beat groups The Boston Dexters and The Buzz. This period of his career was marked by a significant collaboration with the renowned producer Joe Meek in the year 1966.

The pivotal moment in White's illustrious career occurred during the 1970s, as he made history by being the inaugural artist to captivate audiences with a live performance on the esteemed television program, Top of the Pops.

The 1970s proved to be a decade of diverse experiences for the esteemed individual, whose tenure with the Boston Dexters came to a close. Following the disbandment of the group, he embarked on a new career path, hosting his own television program on Scottish Television, a venture that ultimately led him to perform in working men's clubs, a departure from his earlier profession as a skilled stonemason.

In retrospect, he has candidly acknowledged the challenges he faced during this period, stating, "Everyone wanted me to be somebody else. I did a series for STV in the 1970s, my own show, and I ended up in a monkey suit – it was incredibly embarrassing – and doing working men's clubs. I got hooked into that, anything to make a living."

Tam White's personal life during this period was marked by a tumultuous struggle with excessive alcohol consumption, a habit that would eventually be overcome in the year 1980.

It was also in 1980 that White made the decision to reform the Dexters, albeit with a constantly shifting lineup, which now included the talented guitarist Jim Condie and the skilled jazz pianist Brian Kellock.

As a result of this collaboration, White and Kellock would go on to record a duet album, marking a significant creative milestone in their respective careers.

Under the banner of Tam White & The Dexters, the band would soon develop a devoted fan base, with their live performances consistently selling out shows and leaving a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of experiencing them firsthand.

Noted musician White embarked on a remarkable musical journey, securing coveted support slots for blues legends like the incomparable B.B. King, the iconic Al Green, and the esteemed Van Morrison. As the Dexters dissolved for a second time, White's creative endeavors led to fruitful collaborations with talented musicians such as Neil Warden, Fraser Speirs, and the legendary Boz Burrell. This collaborative effort culminated in the formation of The Shoestring Band, which continued to mesmerize audiences with their performances until the untimely passing of Burrell in 2006. Undeterred, White later revived the Dexters, ensuring the continuation of his musical legacy.

Noted musician, White, expanded his creative horizons by venturing into the realm of television acting, commencing his journey in 1990 with a starring role in "The Wreck on The Highway", a production helmed by the talented Colin MacDonald.

Notable television appearances by White include his portrayal of Tony Macrae in the popular BBC soap opera EastEnders, a role he undertook from late 2003 to early 2004, as well as his brief stint in the Scottish soap opera River City in 2009, showcasing his versatility as a thespian.

Thomas Bennett Sim White, a passionate advocate for physical well-being, met an untimely demise on June 21, 2010, succumbing to the devastating effects of a heart attack that struck him down in the midst of a vigorous gym session in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh.
