Although she initially did not prioritize acting after returning to Singapore, she continued to act in her spare time.
Her breakthrough role came when she performed in John Bowen's The Waiting Room, directed by her cousin Ivan Heng. It took almost a decade for her to become a full-time actress. Tan Kheng Hua has been recognized for her contributions to the arts, being named one of 20 Singaporean contemporary artists representing Singapore in Singapore: Inside Out in NYC, London, and Beijing.
Throughout her career, she has received numerous awards and nominations, including The Art Nation Award, DBS Life! Theatre Award, Asian Television Award, Star Awards, and JCCI Singapore Foundation Culture Awards for Contributions to Singapore. Tan Kheng Hua is also a devoted mother to her only daughter Shi-An and enjoys various hobbies such as cats, sports, and yoga. She has even competed in canoeing, gymnastics, and track, and is a certified yoga teacher.
