Tanikella's family background is steeped in literary tradition, with a rich heritage of poets and literary figures from Telugu literature. His grand uncles, Diwakarla Venkatavadhani and Viswanatha Satyanarayana, were renowned figures in the Telugu literary scene. Furthermore, his great-grand-uncle, Divakarla Tirupati Sastry, was part of the celebrated Telugu poet duo, Tirupati Venkata Kavulu.
Tanikella's directorial debut, Mithunam (2012),featured the legendary S.P. Balasubrahmanyam and Lakshmi. This critically acclaimed Telugu drama earned him the CineMAA Award Special Jury Award for Best Direction, a testament to his exceptional skill behind the camera.
