Biography

Thomas Eugene Lovejoy III was a renowned American ecologist who held esteemed positions throughout his illustrious career. As the President of the Amazon Biodiversity Center, he played a pivotal role in conservation efforts. Additionally, he was a Senior Fellow at the United Nations Foundation, leveraging his expertise to drive meaningful change.

Lovejoy's impressive academic credentials included a university professorship in the Environmental Science and Policy department at George Mason University. His professional experience also encompassed a stint as the World Bank's chief biodiversity advisor, where he worked closely with the Latin America and the Caribbean region.

Furthermore, Lovejoy served as the lead specialist for environment in Latin America and the Caribbean, bringing his unique perspective to the forefront. As a senior advisor to the president of the United Nations Foundation, he contributed significantly to the organization's mission.

In 2008, Lovejoy was appointed as the first Biodiversity Chair of the H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the Environment, a position he held until 2013. Prior to this, he served as the president of the Heinz Center since May 2002.

Lovejoy's impact on the scientific community was profound, as he introduced the term "biological diversity" in 1980. His tireless efforts to promote environmental conservation and sustainability led to his appointment as past chair of the Scientific Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) for the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
