Tom Hulce was born in Detroit, Michigan, and grew up in Plymouth, Michigan, where he was raised with his two sisters and older brother. He is the son of Joanna (Winkleman),a former professional singer, and Raymond Albert Hulce, who worked for Ford. With English, German, and Irish ancestry, Tom was initially interested in singing, but his voice changed, and he decided to pursue acting instead.
Tom began taking acting classes and worked as an usher and ticket seller with a small theatrical company in Ann Arbor. He was inspired by Christopher Walken's performance in a play in Stratford, Ontario, and later studied at the North Carolina School of the Arts, Booth Bay Harbor, Maine, and Sarasota, Florida. He also spent a summer in England before heading to New York City to pursue his dream of becoming a Broadway actor.
Tom's breakthrough role came when he understudied the role of Peter Firth in the Broadway play "Equus." He eventually took over the role and received critical acclaim for his performance. Tom's subsequent roles included "Butter and Egg Man," "Memory of Two Mondays," "Julius Caesar," "Romeo and Juliet," "Candida," and "The Sea Gull."
Tom made his film debut in the 1977 film "September 30, 1955," and went on to appear in "National Lampoon's Animal House" (1978) and "Amadeus" (1984),for which he received an Oscar nomination. He continued to appear in period films throughout his career, including "Those Lips, Those Eyes" (1980),"Shadowman" (1988),"Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" (1994),"Wings of Courage" (1995),and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1996).

In addition to his acting career, Tom has also directed several productions, including the off-Broadway musical "Sleep Around Town" and the stage production of "The Cider House Rules" (1998). Tom currently resides in Seattle, Washington, where he owns his own home.
